Trash Finds!

With all the snow still hanging around, I had given up trash picking until spring.  This morning I was surprised to find something that actually caught my eye.  The items in question were spotted on the opposite side of the street and there was no way my 14 yo Samoyed pup was going to be able to climb over the massive walls of snow blocking our path, so we ended up walking back to the corner and having to cross the street and make our way back up the street on the opposite side.  It was worth the effort, because I found a fabulous kitschy black velvet painting of a matador and bull.  With it was also some type of souvenir hat  from a vacation long, long ago.  Not sure what I'm going to do with either of these items, since my walls are pretty full.  My boyfriend has already expressed interest in the black velvet painting by exclaiming that "This would look great in my place!"  Which it would, especially since he has some fantastic velvet paintings of battleships already in his collection.  I'll try to talk him into taking the hat as well.  It is quite nice, with some painting on the brim.  Looks like it was meant to be hung on the wall, rather than be worn.

I love kitsch.  I probably get it from my grandparents, their home was a kitschy dream!  I loved going over there and looking in my grandmother's curio cabinet and seeing all her treasures from her travels over the years.  My parents hated all the kitsch, but I couldn't get enough of it.  Every inch of their walls was covered in something fun to look at.  After my grandmother died, my grandfather sold most of the souvenir's and curios at yard sales *sigh*.  If I was older at the time, I would probably have taken many of the items, but I was still a school kid, and my parents did not want that stuff in their house.  As my mother put it it, the decor was "tacky".   Thankfully I inherited my grandmother's love of kitsch and I am proud of it.

Cabin Fever!

I've had a serious case of cabin fever over the weekend.  My car is still buried under mounds of snow, and my back is still hurting from digging out the back patio.  This has made me a bit stir crazy.  I start re-arranging furniture and re-organizing closets.  Yesterday, I was off from work for the President's day holiday, so I spent several  hours re-arranging my shelves and putting out my Pez collection.  If I was really crazy, I would have put them in order by color, instead I grouped them by type (Star Wars, Winnie the Pooh, Disney characters, Flintstones, Simpsons, etc.).  Spring cannot come soon enough!

It took me several months, but I've finally had time to set up my Etsy shop.  At the moment it just has 8 track tapes available, but I'm planning to add more vintage items into the mix too.  Below is the banner that I created for my store Suzy's 8-Track Flashback.  It will do for now, until I can come up with something more clever.

Snow Day!

My town got 28.5" of snow this weekend.  My poor Samoyed dog Aspen was afraid to go outside because the snow was too deep for him.  Normally he loves the snow, but this was too much for him to handle.  As I frantically worked on shoveling a path for him, he anxiously waited by the door whining like a little baby.  Unfortunately, I wasn't fast enough because he peed in the house.  I can't get mad at him though...he is 14, and I'm amazed that he holds it in as long as he does already.  The weatherman predicts more snow for tomorrow, perhaps up to 12".  I really don't mind it much, as long as I don't have to drive in it.  Thankfully, I rely on public transportation to get me to work.

This is all the snow in my backyard.  You can't even see my gas grill.

While I was shoveling, I accidentally hit the wall and all the snow on top came tumbling down in a mini avalanche.

Aspen was a nervous nellie when trying to walk in the deep deep snow.

For Sammy it was just another sleepy day of lying around the house.

I'm totally sick!  I can't breathe out of my nose, and I'm tired and achy all over.  Today I barely had the energy to do anything at all, but I did manage to watch "Groundhog Day" in honor of Punxatawny Phil making his annual prediction today. Was sad to hear that there will be six more weeks of winter...blech!  Anyway,I"m going to try to get plenty of rest, and hope that Mr. Mucus will decide to move out!
